The BLS for Healthcare Provider Certification is intended for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a credential (card) documenting successful completion of a BLS class, the course also can be offered to anyone seeking BLS competency.  The BLS for Healthcare Providers Class covers core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation. The BLS for Healthcare Providers Class must complete a skills pass off test. At the conclusion of this class, the learner will be able to demonstrate the accurate steps of CPR, demonstrate the proper use of an AED, and demonstrate methods used to relieve choking.

1.       adult and pediatric CPR

2.       two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask

Professional licensing core and pro hours for Contractors, approved by the  State of Utah DOPL

Untrained Lay Rescuer

If a bystander is not trained in CPR, then the bystander should provide Hands-Only (chest compression only) CPR, with an emphasis on “push hard and fast,” or follow the directions of the emergency medical dispatcher. The rescuer should continue Hands-Only CPR until an AED arrives and is ready for use or healthcare providers take over care of the victim (Class IIa, LOE B).

Lay rescuers should assume cardiac arrest based on assessing unresponsiveness and absence of normal breathing (ie, the victim is not breathing or only gasping)

“Look, Listen, and Feel” was removed from the BLS algorithm Lay rescuers should not interrupt chest compressions to palpate pulses or check for ROSC (Class IIa, LOE C).
